why would anyone buy a new ford gt ( other than for heritage and name) when for nearly the same money(within $9,000) you could have a brand new corvette Zo6 with the Zo7 package, a new fully loaded suburban and a mercedes S65

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

(EDIT: For the same price as the 3 cars listed above, you could have 17.165 V-6 mustangs.)

Well, why would anybody buy an Aventador when you could also do the same thing?

Or a 918 when it could be split even more?

Because the value of the GT will go up, where all those other vehicles, except maybe the Z06, will depreciate. Also it's much faster than any of those other cars.

Because: It's exclusive, it has(not really) heritage, it will be much faster, it is not a Corvette, it will be very limited, it looks amazing, etc.

Exclusivity. More money than sense. Attention. Countless reasons that defy logic overall. Personally? I like the car. I'm not big on Ford, but I like the fact that they have the cojones to build this. It's impressive.

Would I pay $400,000 for it? No way. But I still appreciate it, and if I were rich, I may buy one used for the price of a Mercedes S600 Maybach in 10 years from now.

If you're able to afford a $400,000 car.. you aren't interested in what kind of bundle of civilian cars you can patch together for the same price. Suburban? Please. People buying the GT may stoop to Escalade level, if they're tacky like that.

The GT is striking. It's unique, and you'll brag to your friends when these things at LeMans..

Because it's going to go to LeMans and humiliate the 'vettes and the 'rarris.

Oh, and because when you have 100 million dollars, 400k and 100k sound like the same number, oh and the ford is rare so your millionaire friends will be jealous.

What I would do with $400k:

-New M3 in BMW individual Grigio Telesto

-Mercedes Benz GL63 AMG

-Lamborghini Murcielago with a gated manual (or an F430 coupe manual if I can't find a nice lambo)

-Lotus Exige for track

That is a freightening possibility. One which I'm sure Ford will take very seriously. The C7.R is fearsome.. It's still based on a Corvette. No matter how hard you squint your eyes, the Corvette is not a super car, or one encroaching on hyper-car territory.

The Ford isn't likely to be significantly faster than the C7 Z06 anyways. Just look at the numbers, the Z06 weighs 3524 lbs, produces 650hp/650lbft and a near 50/50 weight distribution. I haven't seen the weight of the Ford, but the Chevy's pretty svelte for a supercar, it will almost certainly be lighter, but probably not by too much, they've only said it will produce "more than 600hp" at this point, which means over 600 but not 700 and will almost certainly have a 50/50 weight distribution.

I imagine the two will look pretty similar on paper with the GT having just slightly better numbers than the Z06 with the exception of price and the power curves which will probably be meatier on the Z06's due to it's much larger engine displacement (6.2 vs 3.5)

Kinja'd!!! PS9 > V12 Jake- Hittin' Switches

Kinja'd!!!1

Supercars are universally poor value. It's not hard to get Aventador-levels of performance from less than six figures (much, much less if speed in a straight line is all you care about). The Margins between the +$1 mill. P1, 918 and F70 and the ~$150k Nismo GT-R are razor thin, and even here the next best car (C6Z06) costs half as much.

The Ford GT will be poor value even if it can out run an Aventador. But that doesn't work as an argument against getting one, because you can't buy any supercar if you remain exclusively concerned about getting the most for your money.

Kinja'd!!!0

It should be kind of obvious, but a $400k car isn't about value.

It's exclusivity. All any of these super/hyper car buyers are looking for is a bauble that shows off their wealth while effectively speaking to what's unique about them (in their own heads).

Why does someone by a Lambo over a Ferrari? It fits their self-realized identity better.

Ford will successfully convince 250 very wealthy people per year that they are still a Ford Guy .

Regardless of what number the eventual C7 ZR1 produces, it's not in the same league. The mid-engined Corvette they're talking about for 2017 may though.

The Ford GT would end up in GTE with the Vette, since that's the only class for production based race cars. They are restricted to a formula called Balance of Performance (BoP), to make them competitive head to head.

Kinja'd!!! Forgetful > TopSirloin
03/03/2015 at 22:11

Why not? The C6 ZR1 smoked pretty much every 'supercar' in production at the time, including the GT.

seriously you probably have all of the cars in those categories anyways plus several other if you're considering the GT.

You are correct, I wasn't aware that the C7r wasnt running the 6.2 which I thought would preclude it from that class. Needless to say I don't follow LeMan's that much.

Kinja'd!!! wiffleballtony > Forgetful
03/03/2015 at 22:32

Not really a reasonable comparison considering the previous GT was out of production prior to the ZR1 release.

Kinja'd!!! Forgetful > wiffleballtony
03/03/2015 at 22:40

Kinja'd!!!0

It doesn't discount the fact that the ZR1 was is a supercar... or at least a supercar killer.

It has been proven supercar performance can be obtained in the Vette, and the C7 should only serve as a better platform to do the same.

The same cannot yet be said about the Ford GT. Everything about it is still hypothetical... and to be worth the price tag, it's going to have to be about $300,000 faster than the top of the line Vette.
